BAFTAs 2021: 8 Ups & 7 Downs
6. Best Makeup & Hair: Ma Rainey Beats Pinocchio
The Best Makeup & Hair BAFTA went to Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, which while certainly one of the stronger nominees in the field this year doesn't feel nearly as deserving as the mind-boggling makeup work on Pinocchio.
The transformative feat to create the titular character in Matteo Garrone's fantasy film is so impressive as to be easily mistaken for CGI, which feels far more awards-worthy an achievement than the admittedly stellar makeup and hair work in the Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman-starring musical biopic.
Considering that the Oscar already feels locked down for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, this would've been a ripe opportunity to reward a film for which, sadly, the Oscar nomination will have to be enough.
