Baftas 2021: All The Major Winners & Losers
4. Best Film Not In The English Language - Another Round
Another Round winning Best Film Not in the English Language was certainly a shock. The controversial inclusion of Minari in this category - despite it actually being a mixture of English and Korean - was the favourite by a long shot but lost out to the Danish film which tackled alcoholism and alcohol dependency.
While technically Another Round should win on this basis of it literally being the best film not in the English language, it does feel strange to incorrectly nominate Minari in this category and then not even reward it top honours. This is by no means to say that Another Round was not worthy of receiving this award, an award it will most likely win again at the Academy Awards later this month, but it was easily the biggest upset of the night.
Minari is undoubtedly the best film in this category, and the only film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, so it was a shame to not see it recognised. Thankfully this tale which perfectly distilled the American dream and the immigrant experience managed to pick up Best Supporting Actress, so not all was lost.
