A faithful adaptation of Frank Millers epic 1986 book of the same name, The Dark Knight Returns came out a little over a year ago to much fanfare. It didnt disappoint, either by splitting the story into two features, The Dark Knight Returns managed to stay faithful to nearly every panel of Millers book. As far as standalone Batman graphic novels go, there are few that can hold a candle to The Dark Knight Returns. Because of that, a direct adaptation was simultaneously exciting and somewhat limiting. The famous Tunnel of Love scene, the vocal work from Peter Weller and Michael Emerson, that super final battle all of these were fantastic, and for a fan of the graphic novel they were nothing short of awesome to experience in motion. Frankly, the only reason this epic two-parter doesnt rank higher is because most of the work was done by Miller a couple decades before. I hate to fault it for that, as the animation work, pacing, and overall aesthetic are superb. Make no mistake - TDKR Parts 1 & 2 are spot-on and form an epic ride, featuring characters new and old from both sides of Crime Alley.
