Batman: Every Live-Action Commissioner Gordon Ranked Worst To Best
2. Jeffrey Wright - The Batman
Matt Reeves certainly had a major challenge on his hands when casting the new Jim Gordon for The Batman, given the many terrific actors who have played the part prior, but securing Jeffrey Wright was quite the casting coup indeed.
One of the most skilled and respected character actors of his generation, Wright was an inspired pick for this on-the-rise version of Gordon - one of Gotham's few cops who isn't in the pocket of mobster Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).
Wright's gravelly voice was perfect for this more hard-boiled take on the character, and it's a sheer joy seeing him examine crime scenes alongside Batman (Robert Pattinson).
The Gordon-Batman dynamic will surely be fleshed out in future films, but this is an incredibly encouraging start, with Wright instantly persuading as a good man wading in a cesspool of crime and corruption, even if the film doesn't give much of a glimpse into his personal life.
It's entirely possible Wright could slide into #1 by the time Reeves' apparent trilogy wraps up, but for now he takes a respectable second place, delivering a gritty, immediately likeable Gordon who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty.
