Batman: Every Movie Joker Reveal Ranked Worst To Best

1. The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger

Officially, the first image we ever got to see of Heath Ledger's controversially cast Joker was the set shot above, which teased him in a particularly clever way, confirming the green hair, the pale skin and the blood red smile, only without actually revealing anything specific. It was the perfect tease.

And then Christopher Nolan let his blue chip commodity out of the bag with a simple, duo-chrome image showcasing his scars (deliciously highlighted with red lipstick). It was an ingenious decision as it was the scars that really differentiated Ledger's Joker from Nicholson's before him andd while we knew he'd be a clown, downplaying the cartoonish elements a little by hiding them in darkness proved to be an inspired choice as well.

Phoenix's Joker reveal was very good, but it's going to take something incredible to beat the simple, stunning elegance of this image. Particularly given the story behind it too, given that Ledger's casting was met with even more fury than Michael Keaton's as Batman in 1989.

With that looming over the reveal, imagine the BALLS to release this image. It's incredible and exactly what you'd expect from a film-maker of Nolan's prowess.
