1. Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Baz Luhrmann's 2001 fantastical Moulin Rouge! (the final installment in the "Red Curtain Trilogy") opens up with a tongue in cheek homage to the famous 20th Century Fox fanfare heard at the beginning of all of the studio's films. From that moment on, Luhrmann is a master artist working a brilliant canvas. Moulin Rouge! brought a new found resurgence to the Hollywood musical, and also created a new sub genre of what is now commonly known as a "Jukebox Musical" wherein the story is told through a choral of previously released pop and rock songs. This approach from Moulin Rouge! paved the way for some of the biggest Broadway hits, and subsequent film adaptations, to capitalize on its success. Moulin Rouge! covers songs from artists ranging from Nirvana to Elton John, and at its center continues with a theme that love and creativity are what keep people moving in this world. At the heart of the film's plot is the story of a poor writer named Christian (Ewan McGregor) who becomes the unrequited love of Satine (Nicole Kidman), the dying star of the famous French Burlesque Moulin Rouge. This love story is set to the backdrop of the early 20th Century in bohemian France, with a modern pop rock soundtrack to propel and heighten the drama. The film is a success because of Luhrmann, who's indelible stamp is written all over this film. He creates some of the most memorable numbers ever captured in a Hollywood musical and along with Production and Costume designer Catherine Martin, Cinematographer Donald McAlpine and Film Editor Jill Bilcock celebrates what truly makes film-making such a powerful form of artistic and creative expression. The film is a visual feast for the eyes and was ultimately nominated for 8 Oscars, winning 2 for Martin's costumes and sets. If someone is looking to find out what makes Baz Luhrmann one of the most exciting and entertaining directors working today, show them Moulin Rouge!
