17. The Music Box

Though Belle has stolen his background as an inventor from the Disney classic animated version, Maurice is still an innovative and creative man, dedicating his time to art and to creating intricate music boxes he sells at market.

That detail seems to be an homage to the earliest drafts of the animated version, as there was going to be a mute music box character among the enchanted servants. In time, he was replaced by Chip, but it's a nice nod to that history.

It also turns out that the music box he's working on early in the film has lots of meaning: it's modelled on the windmill of his old home in Paris, foreshadowing the ghosts of his past.
