Beauty And The Beast: 20 Fiendishly Clever Easter Eggs You Probably Missed
6. The Character References
As well as The Wizard Of Oz, Beauty And The Beast also draws heavily on several other classic films.
Obviously, there's the 1946 adaptation of the story, which lent its villain (albeit renamed from Avenant to Gaston, with the intention that a sequel would see Avenant introduced as Gaston's vengeful brother).
But less obviously, the film also draws inspiration from Little Women (for the characterisation of Belle) and Gigi. Lumiere is basically a walking tribute to Maurice Chevalier, including his voice, which might as well be an impersonation by Jerry Orbach. The name Gaston (and the character's arrogance) comes from the film also, and in both cases he is rebuffed by the female lead.
Unlike in Gigi, of course, this Gaston gets no chance of redemption.
