Ben Affleck: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Rafe McCawley - Pearl Harbour

Like Daredevil, Pearl Harbour is another movie that has an awful lot more than just a rubbish Affleck performance at its rotten core, and like To The Wonder you can place quite a lot of blame at the director's feet, but that can't be used as a defence of what he delivered here. So yes, Michael Bay's transparent attempt to replicate the success of Titanic is a terrible movie - overlong, historically confused, incomprehensibly constructed and, well, directed by Michael "F*ck the frame" Bay. And, yes, this is Affleck really flailing in subpar material with little help, but he doesn't help himself. Why he took the project broadly makes sense - at this point Bay was still somewhat well revered, yet to sink to his ultimate, robot balls bottom - but he brings nothing to Rafe, playing straight machismo and preening love triangle corner in a rote manner.
