1. Argo (2012)
Easily Affleck's best film to date - and if you haven't already, check out our
review - Argo is a masterclass of astute writing, pitch-perfect direction, and sublime performances. While Affleck might be overshadowed by the more flashy performances from the supporting cast - John Goodman, Alan Arkin and Bryan Cranston are firing on all cylinders - Affleck's turn as CIA exfiltration expert Tony Mendez is a perfect example of an everyman character, who through Affleck's tempered portrayal, keeps all those complex political machinations well-grounded. Affleck likely won't be scooping up any acting awards as a result, but that's no detriment to the performance; it's perfectly composed, and serves a crucial narrative function, in guiding us through the taut web that, as director, he spins for us. It is a performance that surmises Affleck's career to date - the ultimate proof of his potential as an actor and as a filmmaker. Also, we really dig his facial hair in this film. A lot. That in itself might be Oscar worthy.
