This is likely what they were referring to when they coined the phrase "a role of a lifetime." This is the Kingsley performance that made me sit up and take notice as a kid growing up. Most say this is the role that made his career, even though he was acting long before he appeared in Gandhi. Still, Kingsley's portrayal of the infamous nationalist leader living in British-controlled India perfectly encapsulated the man's influence and reverence as one of society's most beloved social figures. Aside from bearing a striking resemblance to the titular role, Kingsley gives what is undeniably the most powerful performance of his career. He made you believe that he was Gandhi - no doubt about it. So good was he here, in fact, that the Academy gave him an Oscar for his work as the acclaimed pacifist. Since then, Kingsley hasn't managed to win other Oscar, though he has been nominated three times in the aftermath.
