4. Dr. John Cawley (Shutter Island)

shutter-island-ben-kingsley Martin Scorsese's great psychological thriller Shutter Island was a tour de force in great acting, perhaps the best of whom was Ben Kingsley, who plays Dr. John Cawley, the chief psychologist whose controversial methods of therapy clashed with Leonard DiCaprio's investigating agent at a mysterious mental asylum Kingsley nicely brings the feeling of a lost soul to the role, a man who knows that he's in over his head and is struggling with the consequences. With little screentime, Kingsley conveys his character perfectly. Not only was this one of his the man's better performance, but is also proved to be one of the better roles he has taken on in the last five to ten years. Kingsley was perfectly suited for the part and well cast, something we apparently owe to Martin Scorsese's keen eye. Kingsley's character stuck in the mind well after Shutter Island was over, anyway: if you're a fan of the great actor, you don't want to miss out on this one.
