Benedict Cumberbatch: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked
5 That Sucked
5. Dormammu - Doctor Strange (2016)
Say what you want about Doctor Strange, and how excellent the scene between the dread demon Dormammu and the good doctor Strange is at the climax of the film, there's a pretty major issue with it: Dormammu himself.
It is instantly regrettable that Marvel chose not to go with the more traditional fiery head design of the comics and instead went with a sort of giant fluid energy ghost with corduroy face. It has since emerged after the European release that Cumberbatch is the face behind the ripples, following on from his mo-cap work on the Hobbit movies.
The performance is almost entirely swallowed by the design, and the odd narrative speed that makes what is supposed to be an eternal time loop into a five minute montage with Dormammu losing his mind like a giant toddler. The emotion is all well and good, but this is literally an immortal, thousands of years old creature who would have the patience of a glacier, but who loses patience with Strange's antics after literally minutes. It's pretty ruinous of the scene.
