20 Greatest Horror Movie Opening Scenes of the 2020s (So Far)

Zach Cregger strikes again with his second horror feature Weapons, which boasts one of the most electrifying-yet-efficient opening sequences of any horror movie this decade, if not ever.

Wasting no time at all, Cregger immediately plunges us into the film's delirious central mystery, as an unseen child narrator explains that seventeen children from the same classroom recently went missing from their homes in Maybrook, Pennsylvania.

Each of the kids fled their home at 2:17am and vanished into the night, running away with their arms eerily outstretched as if imitating a plane, with only a single child from teacher Justine Gandy's (Julia Garner) class, Alex Lilly (Cary Christopher), not disappearing.

In just four minutes, Cregger cues up one hell of a tantalising mystery, leaves us with a whole ton of questions, and introduces us to the pivotal players.

It's often said that the first 10 pages of a script are what will sell it, and in that case Cregger basically got the job done in five.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
