20 Great Performances Wasted In Terrible Horror Movies
19. Alfre Woodard - Annabelle
The Conjuring series' first spin-off, Annabelle, was bland cinematic junk for the most part - a snoozily pedestrian supernatural horror film that has precious little fun with its possessed doll setup.
But the film does benefit enormously from the presence of Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard, who plays Evelyn, a supporting character vital to helping protagonist Mia (Annabelle Wallis) escape Annabelle's clutches.
As absurd as it all may be, Woodard commits hard to the role of this deeply traumatised woman who ultimately makes a mortal sacrifice to save Mia and her family, and in turn delivers the only memorable, truly emotionally resonant performance in the entire movie.
That's what happens when you book an absolute pro to show up for a few scenes, play Basil Exposition, and be on their merry way.
The material isn't great, but you'd never know it from Woodard's performance, which is as effort-filled as anything she's ever done.
