20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)
2. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Mad Max: Fury Road may have performed relatively modestly at the box office - netting $380.4 million against a $185 million budget - but its enduring pop-culture relevance and massive awards success nevertheless led many to assume that 2024's prequel Furiosa would perform at least as well if not better.
But that's not what happened at all.
Furiosa ultimately made off with just $174.4 million - a hair more than its $168 million budget, and less than half of what Fury Road made almost a decade prior.
And while Furiosa was well-received by critics, it isn't too difficult to see why the film flopped.
For one, many Mad Max fans wanted a direct sequel to Fury Road rather than a prequel centred around a character not called Max, and a Furiosa-led prequel became even less appealing without Charlize Theron reprising her role.
Throw in the wildly overlong nine-year gap between movies and the audience for the film had vanished years before it finally came out, in turn likely ensuring that Warner Bros. won't ever splash out on another Mad Max tentpole.
