20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

1. Strange World

Disney's 2022 animated adventure film Strange World is basically the textbook definition of a movie that was sent out to die, given that despite the film's massive $180 million budget, Disney barely made any effort at all to market it.

Though the film was broadly well-received by critics, it grossed just $74.7 million, reportedly losing Disney around $200 million when it was all said and done.

But again, Disney didn't give it much of a chance, with a bafflingly low-key marketing campaign which failed to emphasise any sort of hook that might draw audiences in.

It didn't help that the film faced stiff tentpole competition from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and later Avatar: The Way of Water, ensuring there was no chance of legging out and becoming a sleeper hit.

Ultimately, this is a movie that just wasn't distinct enough in any way to have a chance of recouping its budget, though it's still shocking that it bombed quite so spectacularly.
