Bill Murray: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

1. Garfield - Garfield (2004) & Garfield: A Tail Of Two Kitties (2006)

So bad that it suffered the ignominy of being mocked by the actor himself in a beautifully throwaway jibe in Zombieland. Perhaps it's cruel to say that Bill Murray's performance in either of the Garfield movies was bad, but then the actor physically chose to make them. He agreed to be associated with the lethargic orange cat the same way Dan Aykroyd agreed to murder Yogi Bear for the regrettable recent movie, and he should be held accountable. And when you really drill down to it, the performance isn't all that great either; there's no personality in the voice, there's no attempt to change it to sound more Garfield-like - the entire thing is based on the knowing self-indulgence of having Bill Murray as the voice. That's literally the only way it's sold, and it's no surprise that Murray put so little into it: when a film seeks only to further actor mythology (as Only God Forgives did with Ryan Gosling) the results are inevitably poor.
