Birds Of Prey Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. Cathy Yan's Stylish Direction

Birds of Prey is undoubtedly one of the best-directed films in the entire DCEU, if not the best outright.

Having cut her teeth on the arthouse circuit, director Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) takes a more measured approach to the film's style, which while gorgeous, lacks both the exhausting excess of the Zack Snyder movies and the corny, overdone slow-mo of Patty Jenkins' work on Wonder Woman.

Though Yan does a fantastic job with the practical action, the effects-driven moments look great too, and despite how many indie filmmakers have struggled to cope with larger budgets, Yan has proven herself an enormously capable blockbuster filmmaker here.

If a sequel does happen, hopefully Yan will be keen to return, because her style is so refreshing when compared to most of the DCEU's directorial efforts to date.
