Black Panther: 12 Rumours That Were Total Bull
4. M'Baku Becomes Man-Ape
The Rumour: Though Marvel Studios were very up-front about the fact that the Jabari tribe leader M'Baku (Winston Duke) would not be referred to as his comic book namesake Man-Ape in the movie due to the unfortunate racial implications, many fans still suspected that he would effectively become the character in everything but name.
The Truth: The movie's version of M'Baku is generally a pretty far cry from his comic book conception, re-imagined here as an unexpected anti-hero of sorts, saving T'Challa from death and eventually even helping him repel Killmonger's troops.
This is true aesthetically, also. M'Baku doesn't wear his famous ape-skin attire or gorilla head-piece from the comics, and aside from his tribesmen wearing ambiguous fur on their armour, there aren't any remote hints to the character's contentious origins at all.
It's a smart move, though, transitioning him from a potentially forgettable tertiary villain into a more devious, reluctant saviour with undeniably self-serving motivations that will better stand the test of time.
