What We Know So Far

In the comics, Ramonda is the second wife of T'Chaka and the mother of Shuri, who is T'Challa's surrogate mother after the death of his real one. She reigns as the Queen Mother in the wake of T'Chaka's death, and a key part of several storylines around Black Panther.

In the film, she appears to be T'Challa's mother - or so the marketing material seems to have insisted so far - and by the look of it, she's a key member of his ruling council. As such, she's an important target, which seems to be why she ends up being kidnapped along with Everett Ross and members of the Dora Milaje.
