Upon hearing the news that Edward James Olmos would reprise his role as Blade Runner "Gaff" in this sequel, fans went practically nuts over the prospect. How would Gaff, arguably the most mysterious character of the first movie, fit into the story all these years later? How would Gaff, who seemed to know way more than any of the other characters in the film, affect the outcome?

Uh, he wouldn't, really.

Whilst Gaff does appear in Blade Runner 2049, his part is minuscule. Officer K goes to visit him in what appears to be a retirement home (Gaff in a retirement home? Please!) and is offered some polite exposition and his very own origami horse. Before you even have time to register who this infamous character is, the scene is over and done with and Gaff is never seen or mentioned again.

It's a disappointing turn, considering how there was an opportunity here to enrich the character. Instead they just did the most obvious thing that they could have done and went for the clichéd "old man in a retirement home" sequence.
