Blade Runner 2049: 10 Reasons It's Massively Overrated

4. It's Not The Kind Of Film You'd Want To Watch Twice

Blade Runner is infamous for its rewatchability. It's one of those movies that you can watch over and over and still find moments or details you never noticed before. It's layered and dense - not to mention genuinely entertaining enough so that you can sit down and look forward to revisiting each and every one of its scenes.

Now think about sitting down to watch Blade Runner 2049 again and the thought of doing so, for one reason or another, doesn't strike as being anywhere near as appealing. The reason? Because the film lays out a simplistic story in the most convoluted way possible, so that something which should have been tight and succinct becomes laborious and even boring the second time you watch it.

At which point it becomes apparent we've got a style over substance situation - at least as far as the majority of the film's scenes are concerned. Because there's nothing inherently interesting about watching Officer K creeping down a dark corridor or across a weird landscape towards a revelation you're already privy to. There are so many scenes that exist to lead us to the next scene - to the next big info dump - but these moments are rarely interesting to sit through the second time round.

Think about this, too: there aren't any truly "great" scenes in Blade Runner 2049 - none that come close to the images burned into our brains courtesy of the original, anyway. Most of the scenes are played as a means to an end, not as self-contained gems you're desperate to relive the second the Blu-ray comes out. Where the heck are all the memorable moments, Mr. Villeneuve?
