Blade Runner 2049 Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

6. Roger Deakins' Oscar-Worthy Cinematography

If there is any sense and justice in the world at all, Roger Deakins will finally win a Best Cinematography Oscar for his eye-meltingly beautiful work on this film, on his 14th nomination no less.

Deakins is a much-loved legend of the industry, of course, and while much of the movie's stylistic grandeur stems from its excellent visual effects, they wouldn't mean much without Deakins' gorgeous lensing.

From the foggy neon of the city streets through to the bleak orange of Deckard's hideout, it's pure cinematography porn, and while some might consider the film's style to ultimately trump its substance, the visuals are certainly backed by some provocative ideas to boot (though saying what they are would be pretty spoilerific).

Simply, this is Deakins' year to finally get gold, and it will be thoroughly well-deserved.
