Blade Runner Vs. Blade Runner 2049: Which One Is Better?
3. Action Sequences
It's fair to say that neither Blade Runner movie is an action-packed set-piece-filled extravaganza, but the original's smaller action beats are nevertheless well-remembered, especially Deckard's "retirement" of Zhora and the final showdown against Batty. The action isn't the point of the movie, but it's stylish and intense for the most part.
2049 boasts a little more action, perhaps by virtue of its runtime above all else, with the opening fight scene against Dave Bautista's replicant and the third act's mad dash to save Deckard proving the most entertaining. It's all shot through with the beauty and restraint you'd expect from Villeneuve.
Winner: Villeneuve's action feels more urgent and brutal (especially that opening fight against Bautista), whereas Scott's has a few goofy affectations (such as Batty sticking his head through the wall) that arguably hold it back a little. 2049 all the way.
