Bohemian Rhapsody Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The Occasionally Rough Production Values

It's clear that Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't exacly thrown together with a shoestring budget, so it's a bit disappointing that the production values are all over the place.

The key issue is clearly the visual effects: a number of CGI scene transitions look goofy and awkward, and it's painfully clear during the (otherwise brilliant) climactic Live Aid sequence that most of the crowd are digital.

There are a few especially dodgy crane shots through the crowd where it's incredibly obvious they've been copy-and-pasted into the scene.

The lip sync could also be better in places, though perhaps a little of the blame here lies at Malek's feet, despite the generally impressive quality of his performance.

It's rather obvious numerous times throughout the film that he's miming over a track - ignoring the impossible-to-imitate nature of Mercury's voice, of course - and perhaps some more judicious editing could've better concealed it.
