Booster Gold Won't Be Connected To The Other Films - Is This The Beginning Of The End For The DCEU?

This is the way shared universes end. Not with a bang, but with a whimper.

All the talk of superhero fatigue and the imminent bursting of the comic book bubble always tends to focus on the build-up and the why of it all, with little if any consideration for how the mega-franchises that barrel through cinemas on a biannual basis would actually wrap up. At any given point Marvel and DC are in post on one movie, shooting another, prepping a third and have countless more in development; you can't just turn out the lights and walk away.

How I think it'll go is we'll see the shared universes' futures suddenly become incredibly uncertain, with less movies being rushed through and contingency plans being made, making shutting one down in a few years without halting mid-production projects somewhat possible. And, with that in mind, we may (emphasis on the may) be seeing the early stages of that over at DC.

According to Greg Berlanti, TV superhero maestro who's currently working on the Booster Gold film, said this to Vulture regarding the film's links to the DCEU:

"As of right now we have no connective tissue to those worlds. It'd be a separate thing"

Now there was never any suggestion this film would definitely be in continuity - it was announced separately - but it was strongly assumed because, well, Warners were betting the backlot on the DC Extended Universe. To not do that, especially for a film whose creation is tied into a wider universe seems like a backward move, and given how much DC have struggled with their Marvel-aping series so far may be a sign of a major alteration; start making movies that don't rely on the tainted product, hopefully reap more profit.

It could be that the film is being written to be its own thing, but with enough ambiguity in certain moments that it can work in the DCEU if needs be. This retroactively happened with Suicide Squad, although in that case we were earlier in the universe and things weren't as set in stone, so it's not really a fair comparison.

It may just be that the Booster Gold movie is and always was a standalone due to the character's lighter nature and lack of notoriety, but this reveal is certainly pause for cause. Throw this on the pile with Inhumans for movies we have no idea what the motivations behind it are.

Do you think Booster Gold not being in the DCEU is a warning sign? Or is it just a pointless story from too early in development to be taken seriously? Let us know your take down in the comments.
