Box Office: $55.7 million for SEX!

So in the end, Sex and the City becomes the highest grossing opening female led film of all time & THE HIGHEST GROSSING R-RATED COMEDY OPENING EVER with a massive $55.7 million. How despicable. Sex and the City to have such a title. American Pie previously had that figure with a $45.1 million opening in 1999. It's also the biggest live-action film opening ever adapted from a t.v. show, beating out Mission Impossible's 1994 gross of $45 million.

Elsewhere, bad word of mouth has only slightly dented Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropping 54% which results in $46 million for the three days and $216.8 million on a $185 million budget. The decently reviewed horror The Strangers performed better than expected with $20 million on a majorly tough weekend, easily making a profit on a $9 million budget. Iron Man is up to $276.6 million and Narnia is on $115.7 million, well short of it's $200 million budget. 1 Sex and the City (2008) $55.7M $55.7M 2 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) $46M $217M 3 The Strangers (2008) $20.7M $20.7M 4 Iron Man (2008) $14M $277M 5 The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) $13M $116M 6 What Happens in Vegas... (2008) $6.85M $66.1M 7 Baby Mama (2008) $2.22M $56.1M 8 Speed Racer (2008) $2.14M $40.6M 9 Made of Honor (2008) $2M $43M 10 Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) $1.04M $60.5M OPENING NEXT WEEK: Adam Sandler does his 2008 version of a ridiculous comedy. His 2007 yawn fest with the same director resulted in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry's $34 million opening. The animated Kung Fu Panda brings a welcome relief to the Dreamworks cannon which had become so bloated with Over the Hedge. It looks fun and should make a damn good piece of profit. The Promotion, Mongol and When Did You Last See Your Father are on limited U.S. release. source - coming soon
