Braveheart: Fact Or Fiction?

3. Fiction: How The Battles Unfolded

The two main battles in the film are Stirling Bridge and Falkirk. The producers got the results of both battles correct, everything else not so much.

The victory for the Scottish at Stirling Bridge was a landslide and one of the most famous in their history. With regards to the film, they showed this as a victory on the open field. In reality, the Scots lured the English over a narrow bridge and split the bulk of their army. They then barraged the enemy, killing hundreds and forcing the English to flee.

The film adaptation of Falkirk is slightly more farfetched. In the film they have Irish soldiers switching sides partway through battle and Robert the Bruce dressed as a black knight on Edward's side. Neither of these things happened, it was a resounding victory for the English and their famous longbow.

This is nit picking but facts are facts. In the film’s version of Stirling Bridge they also have the Scottish forces lifting their kilts after a barrage of English arrows. Sadly, this didn’t happen, they were a rowdy bunch but knew there was a time and place.
