Breaking Bad Movie: 10 Things That Must Happen
7. What Happened To Walt At Gray Matter?
One of the largest unanswered questions in the series - and the impetus for Walt’s insane actions - stems from his self-imposed dismissal from his pharmaceutical start-up Gray Matter Technologies. He left the company just before it hit the big time, and Walt, who sold his share in the organization for a total of $5,000, lost out on millions of dollars.
According to the lore presented in the show, Walt seems to have snapped one day during a 4th of July retreat with Gretchen, his then lab assistant and girlfriend. Fans have speculated - and the show’s creators later hinted - that he did so because he felt inferior to his business partner Elliot Schwartz. Yet, if his goal was superiority, it seems odd that he ended up as a high school science teacher.
If Walter is indeed re-introduced to the series via flashbacks, it would be nice to finally see what happened all those years ago. One could argue that the day he left Gray Matter was the day Heisenberg was born, and it’s a pivotal plot element to which fans need to bear witness. Had Walter stayed with the company, there simply wouldn’t have been a series-worthy narrative to explore.
