Candyman Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
4. Nia DaCosta's Sharp Direction
Nia DaCosta is currently hard at work shooting the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, and with Candyman she certainly proves why she's a major get for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite the aforementioned scripting issues, DaCosta does a splendid job bringing a distinct style to the fore.
From the inspired use of shadow puppets throughout the movie to detail crucial flashbacks, to the unconventional way in which she frames several of the death scenes, this is a beautifully assembled piece of work.
With the aid of cinematographer John Guleserian, DaCosta shoots her subjects in off-kilter ways to provide maximum audience anxiety, making the most of a screenplay that isn't quite up to her level as a director.
