13. Her
Director: Spike Jonze Starring: Joaquin Phoneix, Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde & Rooney Mara. This might be just weird enough to wow Cannes into selecting it. First off, it's directed by Spike Jonze, and stars Rooney Mara, so there's a double whammy of odd talent right there, and then there's the plot, which takes in a lonely writer's developing and unlikely relationship with his newly-purchased operating system that's designed to meet his every need. Echoes of Hal 9000, the early Terminators, and worryingly Electric Dreams there perhaps, but it definitely sounds great.
12. Only Lovers Left Alive
Director: Jim Jarmusch Starring: Tom Hiddleston & Tilda Swinton. On the surface, Jim Jarmusch's latest ticks all of the necessary boxes - it's made by a still-very-hip director with an interesting haircut, and features some outstanding young talents - Tom Hiddleston, Anton Yelchin, Mia Wasikowska - and some established old heads - Tilda Swinton and John Hurt. But it doesn't actually sound all that good, though I will stand to be contradicted. The story follows two vampire lovers who have been together for centuries, as well as an overt commentary on the direction humanity is taking and some familial conflict thanks to Swinton's chaotic little sister Masikowska. So an indie family drama with blood-sucking - definitely another oddity that will be considered.
