No, this isn't yet another remake of the famous musical.

Director Ladj Ly's film Les Misérables is a hard-hitting drama based on police brutality in France inspired by the riots of 2005. The film won the Jury Prize at the festival and the US distribution rights were bought by Amazon Studios for $1.5 million.

Thanks to its widespread critical acclaim coming out of the festival and its heavyweight distribution partner, it's possible than an awards campaign as France's entry in the International Film category is already underway.

For a directorial debut, the film's buzz certainly indicates something special.
