Cannes 2022: 10 Films We Expect To See
5. Asteroid City - Wes Anderson
Wes Anderson premiered the star-studded The French Dispatch at Cannes last year, following a long and arduous delay. And, while its twee, dollhouse cuteness may not have been to everyone's taste, it was undeniably pure, undiluted Wes Anderson.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Anderson has had several projects in the works in the time since filming The French Dispatch, the most notable of which may be the mysterious rom-com drama Asteroid City. The director is known for his frequent collaborators with some of the best in the business, and this will be no different, packing Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum and Jeffrey Wright onto its roster, alongside A-list Anderson newcomers such as Tom Hanks and Margot Robbie.
Lucky for Anderson, this is another film straight out of his own box (made with his American Empirical Pictures production company), as his other upcoming film, a Roald Dahl adaptation, is unlikely to see the light of the southern French sun thanks to its Netflix backing.
The feature wrapped at the beginning of winter 2021, so is a shoe-in for the 2022 festival, given the placing of The French Dispatch last year. While there have been rumours that Asteroid City might skip Cannes and premiere at the Venice Film Festival later in the year, this will only be down to the film not being ready in time, as renowned Francophile Anderson has a love affair with the country going back many decades and would never waste such an opportunity.
