Cannes 2022: 10 Films We Expect To See
2. Elvis - Baz Luhrmann
Effortlessly straddling the fine line between big, glamorous artistic pictures and crowd-pleasing sensationalism, Baz Luhrmann has been wowing the South of France with his films since 1992.
That year, Strictly Ballroom won him the Prix de la jeunesse (Award of the Youth) at Cannes' 45th Edition, and though he has only made five feature films to date, each one has held a special place in the hearts and on the screens of the global film community, from Moulin Rouge being nominated for the Palme d'Or in 2001, to The Great Gatsby opening Cannes' 66th Edition in 2013.
And now, Luhrmann’s revolutionary approach to period sets, his signature life’s-a-party filmmaking, his bold visual style and his ability to create a cutting-edge soundtrack seamlessly blending old and new, all converge in a 2022 release we didn't realise how much we needed: Elvis.
With trailers having just landed in cinemas, Baz Luhrmann’s much-anticipated sixth effort is very much on the way, a whopping nine years since the director last premiered a film. Elvis stars relative newcomer Austin Butler as The King, Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, and a vast complement of other stars from stage and screen, including musicians Gary Clark Jr and Yola Quartey. Promising the sensational visuals, bright palette, fast-paced style and bold production design we have come to associate with Luhrmann’s work, it is an ideal fit for Cannes, and its premiere there is one of the very first to have been officially announced.
