Cannes Film Festival: 20 Best Palme D'Or Winners Ever

14. Pulp Fiction (1994)

John Travolta Pulp Fiction
Miramax

Reservoir Dogs made Quentin Tarantino a filmmaker to watch, but it was Pulp Fiction that saw him realise his full potential and gain the industry recognition he really deserved.

Featuring a stacked and diverse cast led by the career-best work of Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames and Tim Roth, the dialogue-driven thriller sports a loose and unpredictable structure which has since become Tarantino's defining narrative trademark.

From the iconic introduction Jackson's Bible-quoting, concentration-breaking hitman Jules Winnfield to Travolta and Thurman's dance to Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell", Pulp Fiction is far from shy of classic, era-defining scenes and character interactions.

Moving from almost all-out comedy to violent thriller and back again within mere lines of dialogue, Tarantino's masterwork has yet to be topped by the director or his legions of unworthy imitators. It's simply so infectious, quotable and memorably unique that it would have been a crime if it didn't take home Cannes' biggest prize.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
