Cannes Film Festival: 20 Best Palme D'Or Winners Ever

12. Blow-Up (1967)

John Travolta Pulp Fiction
MGM

A film which inspired an entire era of paranoid thrillers, Michelangelo Antonioni's signature mystery Blow-Up follows a photographer (David Hemmings) who may or may not have captured a murder on film, which leads an obsession that threatens to consume him.

Equal parts enrapturing suspense flick and hypnotic character study about a man whose life is very much confused, conflicted and defined by his work, the film moves between tone, mystery and plot twists with remarkable ease. What follows is a movie which is as disturbing, darkly humorous in parts and strange as it is playful and unpredictable.

Also, you can't talk about Blow-Up without mentioning David Hemmings lead performance, which sees the film through every one of its twists and turns and crafts from Antonioni's story a great sense of urgency and delirium.

Blow-Up may have inspired an entire generation of filmmakers, but few films have done multi-layered mystery better.
