Captain America: Civil War - 10 Biggest Last Minute Concerns
9. Zemo Is Another Poor Villain
You really have to wonder how Daniel Bruhl's bad guy even fits into proceedings with so many plot elements and characters to compete with. He's nothing like the superviallin in the comics - aside from being motivated by revenge - having been seemingly symbolically shorn of his Baron title, his iconic purple mask and pretty much everything that defines him as a character.
Unfortunately, the concerns about him as a character have found some parallel in reviews - particularly in IGN's unimpressed evaluation:
"As for the bad guy, Daniel Bruhl's Zemo (no longer a Baron here) joins the increasingly crowded ranks of the MCU's underwhelming villains played by fine actors. Marvel movies just don't seem that interested in antagonists other than Loki, putting the emphasis on their heroes' conflicts with each other instead. While Zemo's motive is very human and compelling, his actual scheme doesn't hold up under scrutiny and relies on a few too many coincidences."
That's the worst kind of fuel for that anxiety.
