Captain America: Civil War - 8 Things We Learned From Team Iron Man On Jimmy Kimmel

5. Paul Bettany Was Told His Career Was Over Just Before He Was Cast As Vision

Marvel Studios

When asked whether there was a long-term plan mapped out for JARVIS to evolve into Vision in Age Of Ultron, actor Paul Bettany admited that it was very much a two phase process. He'd been asked by Jon Favreau to voice JARVIS for Iron Man, but then had to wait for Joss Whedon to ask him to play Vision, suggesting his arc wasn't set in Phase One.

Interestingly, the way Bettany told the story, he had just had a meeting with a producer who was telling him his career was over (a regular occurence in Bettany's words) when Whedon called and he jumped at the chance.

He also gave some insight into the logistics of shooting as Vision: he had to go through at least 3 hours of make-up and to remain cool they built him a vest that flowed cold water around his body ("like being inside a gin and tonic").
