Captain America: Ranking Every Movie From Worst To Best
5. Avengers: Age Of Ultron
There was a point in early 2015 where it looked like Avengers: Age Of Ultron could be bigger than Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And why would you think any different? Joss Whedon was back writing and directing and the MCU had exploded in the years since the first film, now the dominant force in blockbuster cinema.
The end result, however, was incredibly muddled. There's some pretty good action, great ideas and the Whedon-isms shine through, but what the movie's going for is unclear, with a plot that exists solely to enable action or bluntly allude to upcoming movies. The clashes between studio and director is well-documented, which kinda explains it a bit, although it's worth noting that the things Whedon pushed for - Black Widow as a sterile "monster", spending twenty minutes doing nothing at Hawkeye's house - weren't exactly fun either.
It's also the film that has the least for Captain America to do - Steve Rogers has grown into the role of the Avengers' leader, but, aside from a few scenes interacting with Tony Stark as vague fan-bait for Civil War, is left to mostly go through the plot motions and watch Hawkeye and Black Widow get all the character development fun.
Still, when you get down to it, Chris Evans is still great (most of the cast are), and its systemic problems definitely don't stop it being an overall fun ride.
