Patriots assemble! Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the ninth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, is out today in the UK (it will hit US cinemas on April 4th - not long to go, guys!) This long awaited sequel, following last year's Thor: The Dark World, returns to our screens as an explosive, espionage-charged thriller, with all the quips, in-jokes, and references you'd expect from a movie about a man who dresses up in red, white and blue and hurls a shield at his enemies. For the most part, then, we can confirm that Captain America: The Winter Soldier delivers on all fronts: it's funny, action-packed and relentlessly paced (our review here). That's not to say it's perfect, though. In all the ways that The Winter Soldier successfully trumps Thor: The Dark World's sense of meandering placeholder, and manages to provide fans with a movie that feels both natural to the established Marvel universe, whilst justifying its existence as a standalone movie, it also repeated a few of the nagging tropes that have become so frequently associated with films in the MCU canon.
