Captain America: The Winter Soldier Trailer - 5 Things We Learned

5. It's Much Darker Than The First Avenger

Dead Captain America: The First Avenger was an interesting entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the way it blended nostalgia and old-time-American-fun with modern storytelling, creating a period piece that fit in perfectly alongside contemporary superhero cinema. We live in a world where people prefer a more realistic tone to their comic book movies, and The First Avenger acted as a refreshing counterpoint to films like The Dark Knight, delivering pulpy action and old-fashioned optimism. The Winter Soldier, however, is firmly rooted in the present day and therefore, is a bit darker. The film looks to be more dramatic than any Marvel film we've seen, and the rumors of it being a political thriller look to be right on the money. Sure, there's a brief comedic beat in this trailer; and you can rest assured that the same Marvel escapism present in all of their films will live on here, but this dramatically shows us that the world has changed since Cap's fighting days in WWII.
