Captain Marvel: 10 Questions We Still Have

9. Does It Set Up The Secret Invasion Storyline?

The presence of the shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls invites a number of tantalising questions, namely whether or not this is setting up a future adaptation of the Secret Invasion comic book storyline.

We know that the film will touch on the Kree-Skrull war, but the Secret Invasion is an extremely ambitious and large-scale event, where the Skrulls use their abilities to impersonate key figures on Earth, causing intense paranoia among superheroes.

It's a brilliant premise and one which would fit the MCU like a glove, though we currently have no idea whether or not it's actually going to be fully established in this movie for a fully-blown treatment in Phase 4 or not.

Given that Kevin Feige has stated that the next phase of the MCU will move away from the typical formula, we suspect the Secret Invasion will only serve as a backdrop to inspire the plot of this movie while not actively teasing a long-form narrative arc.

There will surely be a plot twist where a character is revealed to be a secret Skrull, but beyond that, it's probably too much to satisfactorily cram a full-scale Secret Invasion adaptation into a single movie already preoccupied with selling its titular hero.
