Captain Marvel: 10 Reasons To Be Excited
9. Mar-Vell
A classic and beloved silver-age hero of the comics, the (somewhat uncreatively named) Kree spy and costumed hero Mar-Vell was the first to bear the moniker "Captain Marvel" before it was passed on to Carol Danvers.
He was sent to Earth to assess its threat levels against the Empire, but his affection for the people led him to don his costume and use his enhanced power to protect them. He was eventually tried by the Kree Empire for treason, but found his way back to Earth and became a hero there for many years, before eventually succumbing to cancer in one of Marvel's most emotional stories, "The Death of Captain Marvel".
Played by Jude Law in the upcoming film, Mar-Vell's role will likely be the same—a Kree spy assessing Earth's threat levels—but follow the story first presented in the Yost-verse cartoon, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, in which Mar-Vell falls in love with Carol Danvers and uses his power to save her life, accidentally giving her abilities.
Romantic feelings or no, it's clear that the two Captains Marvel will form a close bond in the film, with Mar-Vell liable to teach Carol how to deal with her new power-set.
