Captain Marvel: 12 Rumours That Were Utter Bull
5. It Sets Up The Secret Invasion Storyline
The Rumour: As soon as the Skrulls were confirmed to appear in Captain Marvel, it was accepted by many that the film would either serve as a direct adaptation of the much-loved Secret Invasion comic book storyline or, more likely, lay the foundations for an adaptation further down the line.
In the comics, the Secret Invasion saw the Skrulls assuming the identities of iconic superheroes as they planned to take over Earth, fuelling a toxic air of paranoia among The Avengers.
The Truth: Surprisingly, the whole paranoia angle is weirdly downplayed aside from a few quick "gotcha!" moments, and in fact, it turns out that the central Skrulls aren't even particularly bad guys.
Granted, the fact that Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and co. are simply refugees seeking a new home doesn't mean that bad Skrulls aren't out there. But one gets the feeling this was a one-and-done story rather than something that will be picked up in the next phase of the MCU.
