Captain Marvel: 9 Things You Need To Know About The Skrulls
1. The Skrulls Started A War Between Rival Studios
In the world of Marvel comics, everybody hangs out with everybody. In the world of Film and TV, it isn't so simple.
In current times, the Avengers and all their respective on-screen buddies are owned by Disney/Marvel studios, whereas The X-Men, Deadpool and The Fantastic Four are owned by Fox, hence the absence of crossovers in the two universes. (For the time being, at least.)
But what about the Skrulls, whose long complex history means they have meddled consistently with pretty much all of the above?
The answer, as famously clarified in a tweet from Guardians director James Gunn a few years back, is that Marvel/Disney have the rights to use most, but not all, of the Skrulls.
This is due to the nature of the screen rights owned by Fox. Certain individual characters such as Super Skrull have been off limits to the MCU, whereas the Skrull race as an entity can be freely used by Disney and Marvell.
But a recent shareholder deal between Disney and Fox has reset the negotiation table, meaning that the Skrulls could be reunited with their villainous loved ones and appear in one universe after all.
