Captain Marvel Almost Had A Completely Different Post-Credits Scene

Who doesn't love Thor: Ragnarok?

Despite opening to relatively strong reviews last Thursday, Marvel Studios' latest offering, Captain Marvel, is currently experiencing some criticism for its supposedly lacklustre post-credits scene.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

The sequence in question features Goose, a Flerken who had previously consumed the Tesseract while aboard Mar-Vell's vessel, coughing up the Cosmic Cube like a hairball in Nick Fury's office. People dislike this because we're not allowed nice things, obviously.

However, in a conversation with Empire, Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck revealed that they almost had something very different in mind:

"There was an idea on the table about having Jude Law […] emerge from his pod on Sakaar... and then have him look around and see the Devil's Anus behind him and wonder, 'Where the hell am I?'"

Needless to say, the prospect of Marvel Studios returning to Thor: Ragnarok's gladiatorial planet is one most fans would lap up in an instant. The location was one of the most vibrant seen in the MCU to date, and with the likes of Beta Ray Bill having fought on the planet long ago (at least if that statue is anything to go by), the door is certainly open to Jude Law's Yon-Rogg having fought there as well.

It's worth mentioning though that Empire state this was an "early concept" and nothing more. Still, it's nice to contemplate what could've been, with the thought of Rogg getting tormented by Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster an equally compelling concept to entertain.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
