Captain Marvel Review: 7 Ups & 6 Downs
4. There's WAY Too Much Slow Motion
Slow motion has its place just as slanted cameras and lens flare do. That place is to be used sparingly for effect and only when it's DEFINITELY necessary.
Sadly, that's not always the case in Captain Marvel and the over-reliance on the device in order to manipulate audience reaction is jarring. It's like the directors are seeking as many cheap fan-baiting moments as possible, You don't need all of those moments to be framed slowly, sometimes an audience can work out what is epic and what isn't on their own. Sometimes, it's clear the directors possibly don't.
There are other moments in there that suggest an investment in guiding how the audience feels a little too overtly. There's one divisive and VERY on-the-nose musical moment, involving No Doubt, for instance, which seems to be suggesting exactly what we should be taking from the same to the detriment of autonomous experience.
