As previously mentioned, the entire test flight sequence shown earlier in the teaser appears to build up to the moment Carol Danvers finally gets her powers. She's seen battling in a dogfight against an alien spacecraft, and with her on the ground in this scene with her flight-suit on one would presume it takes place shortly after.

In the comics, Carol Danvers gets her powers after being caught up in a Kree explosion. As she is in the vicinity of the original Mar-Vell, the blast ends up melding Danvers' genes with Mar-Vell's, effectively becoming half human, half Kree.

More recently, the comics revealed that Carol's mother was actually Kree too, and that the blast merely awakened her inherited genetic makeup. We don't know which route the film will take, but it would be safe to assume that this encounter is what eventually transforms Captain Marvel into the most powerful superhero of the MCU.
