Captain Marvel Trailer Review: 9 Ups & 2 Downs

1. Mythology Building (But With Subtlety)

If you hadn't already caught it in the marketing, Kevin Feige wants us all to know that Captain Marvel is the most powerful hero who has ever come to the MCU. He's even stated that much pretty overtly in the past and this trailer might as well have been made with his mantra at the top of all of the editors' screens.

As such, the trailer does a magnificent job of building up her instant mythology without giving too much away. We see flashes of her powers and there's definitely a look at Carol Danver's already impressive physical strength even before she "levels up" and the whole thing screams Big Deal.

And crucially, this is all without ever really showing who she's fighting (aside from the old lady), which is a remarkably clever creative choice because all we have to compare her to is herself and the other human characters. Without showing her in open combat with an imposing alien enemy, but while also hinting heavily at them through atmospheric building and a general ominous tone, she looks like a total bad-ass.

It's the difference between watching a boxing match and watching a hype video of each boxer working out and sparring with a hobbled opponent. This is how you do hype for a comic book movie character you want everyone to know is the real deal.
